This project was the culmination of the Industrial Design Computing II class. Created entirely in digital 3D using Form-Z, this desk scene is the most realistic work I have made in 3D to date. This project was completed over a month's time.

Mindtrap

In choosing what to put on the virtual desk, I attempted to make the items on the desk representative of myself.

  • Etched glass block-
My symbol and my web alias
  • Ruler and Sharpie markers-
Industrial design (designers can't get enough Sharpies)
  • Gold cross and True Love Waits ring (silver)-
        My faith & morality
  • The One Ring (gold)-
The Lord of the Rings by Tolkien

  • Gold Cross
  • Mindtrap (blood-red crystal) and Dream Ring (twisted stone ring)-
The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan
  • Small Enterprise bookmark-
        Star Trek
  • Guinea pig photo-
        My guinea pig, Grizzly
  • Power cord and remote-
My MacBook Pro (I've always preferred Mac)

Rings & Cross

Many of the objects depicted in the scene were copied directly from my actual desk- the wire pencil cup, markers, whiteboard, the two small rings, the Apple remote and power cord, etc. A few things came from my imagination, such as the glass block with my web alias and logo suspended inside, made to mimic the effect of laser-etched glass, as well as the items from books and the gold cross. In my original setup, the desk surface would have a map of Middle Earth (the world of The Lord of the Rings) on it, and this is reflected in some of my closeup shots. My teacher recommended against it so that the scene would not be too busy.
